  • Stars like Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, and Jack Black are set to feature in the film.
  • Directed by Eli Roth with reshoots by Tim Miller, this movie kicks off a new cinematic universe for the Borderlands series.

Release Date and Production Details

The highly anticipated live-action adaptation of the Borderlands video game series will hit theaters on August 9, 2024. Announced in 2015, the film wrapped filming in 2021.

Behind-the-scenes footage was shown at CinemaCon 2022, and audience screenings also took place that year.

In 2023, Tim Miller stepped in for two weeks of reshoots while original director Eli Roth focused on another project, Thanksgiving.

Borderlands First Look: The Trailer

The first trailer for Borderlands was released on February 21, 2024. The trailer showcases a vibrant cityscape and intense action sequences.

Cate Blanchett’s character, Lilith, reluctantly returns to Pandora on a mission to find the missing daughter of Atlas, played by Edgar Ramirez.

She teams up with a diverse group of misfits, including Kevin Hart’s Roland and Jack Black’s Claptrap.

Plot Synopsis

According to Lionsgate, the official plot summary is: “Lilith, an infamous outlaw with a mysterious past, returns to her home planet of Pandora to find the missing daughter of Atlas, the universe’s most powerful man. She forms an alliance with Roland, Tiny Tina, Krieg, Tannis, and Claptrap. Together, they battle alien monsters and bandits to protect the girl, who holds the key to unimaginable power.

In an interview with IGN, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford hinted at creating a Borderlands Cinematic Universe (BCU).

He said, “One of the cool things about the movie is we’ve created a cinematic universe that lives side by side with the video game universe. This isn’t Borderlands 1 or 2. The Borderlands movie is the first of the BCU. You’ll see some familiar characters but with independent storylines.

Borderland Movie Cast and Crew

Initially directed by Eli Roth, with a script co-written by Craig Mazin, the movie has seen several changes.

Mazin later removed his credit, and the script is now co-written by a mysterious ‘Joe Crombie,’ speculated to be Mazin’s pseudonym, which he denies.

Tim Miller, known for Deadpool and Sonic the Hedgehog, handled the reshoots.

The star-studded cast includes:

  • Cate Blanchett as Lilith
  • Kevin Hart as Roland
  • Jack Black as Claptrap
  • Ariana Greenblatt as Tiny Tina
  • Edgar Ramirez as Atlas
  • Florian Munteanu as Krieg
  • Gina Gershon as Mad Moxxi
  • Jamie Lee Curtis as Dr. Patricia Tannis
  • Bobby Lee as Larry
  • Olivier Richters as Krom
  • Janina Gavankar as Commander Knoxx
  • Cheyenne Jackson as Jakobs
  • Charles Babalola as Hammerlock
  • Benjamin Byron Davis as Marcus
  • Steven Boyer as Scooter
  • Ryann Redmon as Ellie
  • Harry Ford as Middleman
  • Penn Jillette
  • Haley Bennett

Tim Miller expressed his excitement about joining the project, saying, “It was an interesting experience to come in and do reshoots on a movie that’s not yours. It’s a freeing experience where you feel like I’m just here to help wherever I can.

He also praised the cast, especially Ariana Greenblatt, who is known for her role in Barbie.

Fan Reactions and Future Prospects

Fans of the Borderlands video game series are very excited about the movie. With its unique blend of humor, action, and a star-studded cast, expectations are high.

Jamie Lee Curtis said the movie is “badonkadonk bonkers,” which shows just how fun and wild it will be.

While some beloved characters like Brick and Mordecai won’t appear in this installment, the film promises to deliver a thrilling adventure and lay the groundwork for future movies in the Borderlands Cinematic Universe.
